If you need to have an approximate estimation of the number of grafts needed to cover the balding area or to get a full head of hair with good density. A graft might be a single hair root, 2 hairs, 3 hairs, or even 4 hair clusters.

Natural density of hair transplant

When it comes to healthy individuals and individual hair numbers, the average number is between 120 and 140 hairs per square centimeter, and hair grafts are between 60 and 70. A single graft of hair rarely contains just a single hair. Since only about 50% of natural hair density is required to provide an impression of fullness, most surgeons will transplant a minimum of 40 grafts in 1cm square.

Which Factors Affect the Density of Grafts?

The quality of grafts, number of hairs present in each graft varies from individual to individual. Some variables affect the density of follicles in grafts extracted from one’s donor area which are explained below:

Genetics and Individual Characteristics : Scalp size, graft quality, hair density varies from individual to individual and can be determined through a close examination of the same. Hair Color, Age, and Ethnicity matter the density of hair on the individual's scalp.
